Nobu Ryokan Malibu brings Japanese hospitality to the Golden State

Until recently, those seeking a seaside honeymoon in Malibu had few options. Now, after its long-awaited opening in late April, Nobu Ryokan Malibu is taking limited reservations for its 16 sleek and exclusive rooms, attended by a seasoned staff of 25. The teak-clad structure and its perfectly manicured Japanese gardens hover just above the Pacific, providing direct coastal access to Malibu’s prime Carbon Beach.

Once a 1950s surfside motel, the property required a full, four-year renovation under the direction of Shawmut Design and Construction, TAL Studio, Montalba Architects and Studio PCH, which rolled out a focused scheme of tan-hued linens, ipe wood, limestone and cozy fireplaces. Book any of the four beachfront suites and get lost in serenity as the waves crash below your private deck; the second-story Suiheisen (Horizon) suite is the only one with a balcony overlooking the coastline. Nearly every room comes with a Japanese soaking tub, while the Nobu suite also has separate his-and-her bathrooms for wedded bliss. From $1,100/night; 22752 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu; noburyokan malibu.com.
